The Victorian Department of Health has published guidelines on ventilation principles and strategies to reduce aerosol transmission of COVID-19.

With the release of the document, the Victorian government has gone further than other jurisdictions in providing detailed information and advice on the subject of COVID-19 and ventilation. The state is still recording a high number of cases, with a seven-day average of more than 1,000 daily infections.

The document focuses on workplaces in Victoria including office spaces, retail and hospitality, as well as primary care, community settings – that is, non-acute care and non-residential settings. It contains advice on optimising air exchange and airflow in enclosed, indoor settings to assist in reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

According to the Department of Health, the guidelines are aimed at all managers (including building managers and facility managers) owners and occupiers of any Victorian workplace and primary or community services/facilities. The material is also intended for occupational health staff, including infection prevention and control leads if applicable.

As well as providing general information on aerosol transmission and ventilation systems, the document presents specific strategies for mechanical ventilation, natural ventilation, and air recirculation and filtration. Within this final section, topics such as split system air conditioners, fans, and air cleaners are also addressed. Information is included on different forms of ultraviolet disinfection, air ionisation, and the use of CO2 monitors.
