USA: The US Environmental Protection Agency has added the low GWP refrigerant HCFO1233zd(E) to its list of acceptable substitutes under the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) programme.
Specifically, the inclusion of HCFO1233zd(E) in the Federal Register lists it as suitable for use in new equipment for cold storage warehouses, ice skating rinks and industrial process air conditioning.
The EPA determines that HCFO1233zd(E) does not pose greater overall environmental and human health risk than other available substitutes in the same end-uses.
HCFO-1233zd(E) is non-flammable, non-toxic A1 ASHRAE classification and a GWP of 3.7.
As an HCFO (hydrochlorofluoro-olefin), it does, however, possess an ozone depletion potential, but this is very low (less than 0.0004). Upon release into the atmosphere, the molecule is said to rapidly disintegrate.
HCFO1233zd(E) has already been widely adopted by leading manufacturers as an alternative to R123 in new low pressure centrifugal chillers. Trane was first to the market in 2014, using the refrigerant in its Series E CenTraVac chillers. Notably, four of these chillers were subsequently used in a high profile project to provide cooling for the Channel Tunnel link between the UK and France.
